ABS Trust Fund and Kirkbright and Steers bursary awards

The ABS Trust accepts applications from UK-based researchers who are either PhD students or within five years of completing their PhD. Funding may be used to support activities such as:

  • Presenting research at a conference
  • Attending a workshop or training course
  • Visiting an overseas laboratory

The bursary will not normally exceed £500 and is unlikely to cover the full cost of the activity. Applicants should indicate whether matching or greater funding is available from their institution or another funding source.

Applications are reviewed monthly, with outcomes communicated the following month.

Royal Society of Chemistry Researcher Development and Travel Grant

The RSC Researcher Development and Travel Grant supports PhD students and early-career researchers in academia and industry undertaking activities that support their research career.

Applicants may apply for up to £500 towards:

  • Knowledge development (e.g. conference participation)
  • Skills development (e.g. training courses)
  • Networking (e.g. organising meetings or visiting collaborators)

Eligibility and Restrictions

  • Must be an RSC member
  • Must be a PhD student or Early Career Researcher
  • Only one grant may be awarded every three calendar years
  • Some grants may be linked to specific conferences

Required Documents

  • Description of the activity
  • Explanation of how participation will benefit the applicant
  • Details of how the funding will be used
  • Supervisor or line manager support statement

NMRDG Bursary

The NMR Discussion Group offers bursaries of up to £400 to support:

  • Training
  • Short research placements (including industry)
  • Conference attendance

There are three application deadlines each year:

  • 1 March
  • 1 July
  • 1 November

Decisions are communicated within four weeks of the closing date.

Eligibility

  • Current PhD students at UK universities or research institutes
  • Those undertaking NMR-related training in industry
  • Non-students will be considered on an ad-hoc basis – email the NMR DG Secretary
  • Must be a member of both the RSC and NMRDG

Conference bursary recipients are expected to present either a poster or an oral presentation.

Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund Overseas Conference Travel Grant

These grants support postgraduate PhD students at UK or Irish higher education institutions undertaking analytical chemistry research.

A grant will not normally exceed £750 and should normally constitute no more than 50% of the total conference costs.

Students who have previously received a grant under this scheme are not eligible to apply again.

Conference-Specific Support

Many conferences also provide travel awards, stipends and registration waivers.


ENC Student Travel Stipend

  • Must be a full-time graduate student
  • Must be the presenting author on an abstract
  • Preference given to applicants who have not previously received a stipend
  • Only one applicant per research group
  • Advisor support letter required

The PANIC Student Travel Grant includes:

  • Free conference registration
  • Potential additional travel stipend depending on sponsorship

SMASH Scholarships

SMASH offers scholarships for graduate students and academic postdoctoral researchers.

The award includes:

  • Free conference registration
  • Registration refund if already paid
  • $500 for intercontinental travel

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student or academic postdoctoral researcher
  • Must submit a detailed abstract
  • Must present a poster or talk
  • Must be the primary author
